Google is planning to use wireless technology to replace last-mile fibre to make it cheaper to offer high-speed broadband in residential areas.

Google chairman Eric Schmidt said the point-to-point wireless technology has become cheaper because of semiconductor improvements.“These point-to-point solutions are now cheaper than digging up your garden and so forth,” said Schmidt.

Google started to test the wireless replacement in 2014, which involved different frequencies – including millimetre-wave frequencies capable of transmitting data at high speeds.
