There was a power failure and now I can't connect to the Internet:
Eskom power cuts affect all aspects of our day-to-day lives, including your ability to connect to the Internet. The indications from Government are that this will be an issue that we all have to contend with for a few years to come.
Blackouts tend to affect large parts of the Internet infrastructure in South Africa, but you can rest assured that ET uses backup power generators to ensure that our core services remain unaffected. This means that when your power comes back on again, you should be able to access your services again without delay.
Eskom load shedding can affect your Internet connection in different ways. Read on to find out about the steps you can take to troubleshoot your Internet connection after a power cut, and how to safeguard your equipment from power surges.
Diagnosing connection problems after a power cut:
When the power came back on, did your modem or router come back on too?
To make sure, switch it off for 20 seconds and back on again. Switching a router off and back on is often all you need to do to get back online.
If your modem or router didn't come back on after a power cut, it may have been damaged by a power surge when your electricity connection was restored after load shedding. To protect your hardware, we recommend the special new plugs or extension cords that are marked as safe for power surges. Also consider investing in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) which Eden Telecom will supply at your request or ask your IT support specialist for a quotation.
Please also switch off your hardware at the wall switch and unplug it(before scheduled load shedding starts) or when your computer is not in use.
In rare occurrences, a power surge will reset your router to a factory default state. This will require your IT support specialist to re-configure your router after a power failure.
